On July 9th, 2023, the Grandview Institution (GVI) and the Japanese Nakasone Yasuhiro Peace Institute (NPI) held an online dialogue. The participating experts and scholars  analysed the political and security factors in the current Sino-Japanese relations, discussed the impact of Sino-Japanese-US trilateral relations on Sino-Japanese relations, and the impact of China and Japan’s respective domestic politic issues on Sino-Japanese relations.

The experts participating in the meeting said that as a result of a combination of the deterioration of relations between China and the US, and the ongoing Russo-Ukrainian conflict, antagonism between China and US has become exacerbated and Sino-Japanese differences more pronounced. Both the Japanese government and the Japanese people worry that the Taiwan issue will pose a threat to Japan’s security. Despite of the objective difficulties, the condition for improving Sino-Japanese relations is slowly maturing. It is recommended that relevant parties of the two countries actively restart the process of improving Sino-Japanese relations, establish a stable, constructive, mutually beneficial and win-win Sino-Japanese relations in accordance with the new era. Especially since this year is the 45th anniversary of the signing of the “Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship”, both parties should step to ensure the stable development of Sino-Japanese relations as soon as possible.
